As we finish our fourth week of working from home, remote working is beginning to feel more and more normal. We’ve even noticed some benefits, like getting time back from the commute and some people are finding it easier to get into the flow of work. However, we can’t help but reminisce about all the moments that previously made up our working week at Mo HQ.
Here are the moments we are missing the most and how we are recreating them at home.
The sound of people working around you, collaborating and having general conversation can be very motivating, especially to those who don’t like working in silence. The buzz can also deliver a welcome break from concentrating on your own workload.
To replicate the sound of the busy, open plan office (and even the buzz of the coffee machine), we’ve been using ambient-sound YouTube videos, which are especially great if you struggle to work without some background noise.
We are spoilt by the endless lunch options in Shoreditch, including Whitecross Market and Kebab Square; we are even dreaming about the giant halloumi salad boxes we used to get on a weekly basis. But we also miss the time we spend together around the kitchen table, having unexpected and random conversations, including where to find the best fish finger sandwich and taxidermy (to name a few!).
To ensure our newest starter didn’t miss out on the customary first day lunch, each member of the team ordered a takeaway and ate together over a video call. Other Mo team members have also started virtually cooking and eating together during their lunchbreaks to ensure they don’t miss out.
Although we use different tools to collaborate across teams and squads, we are missing the face to face conversations and discussions that you could easily have when in the office. It’s always good to learn from each other and hear a different perspective when trying to solve a problem. We are also missing the many white boards and post it notes that we use to write down and illustrate our ideas.
In lieu of face to face conversations and stand ups, we are using tools like Slack, Notion, Zoom and Kanbanize to stay connected and to keep project work moving forward.
Once upon a time we had 2 to 4 office dogs at Mo HQ each day. We could play with Hank the office puppy or try to gain the respect of Whitman, the older, wiser poodle who didn’t have time for anybody’s nonsense.
Luckily, Jess is sending us daily pictures of Hank to keep us all happy!
Our Community team are really missing organising and hosting awesome events for HR professionals and anyone who is interested in making work a better place for employees and businesses.
It might be some time before we can visit the top of the Gherkin to talk with Maggie Alphonsi or Soho hotel with Euan Blair again, so we are working hard to get plenty of new and exciting podcasts live and creating lots more blog posts for our community.
That’s right, we take the old-school street game very seriously at Mo. We even have a Notion board to record scores. Taking the time to exercise and to participate in a bit of friendly competition can really help to break away from the stresses of work and regain focus.
To get our competitive fix and to make sure we are staying active, we’ve started a few sports clubs, including Run Club and a Handstand club, where the members are learning how to do handstands!
When we’re at Mo HQ, it’s easy to talk to each other and catch up with people in different teams. These moments really help us stay connected and feel more together.
We have to mention our very own app, Mo, for this! Sharing even more moments than normal has helped us stay connected and updated on all the positive things that are going on across the company.
Hopefully we'll be back in our office soon, but right now we're doing the best we can to stay connected with each other!
